Crisp is the most generous of the mainstream chat suites in what it packs into a low monthly price, and its AI is unusual in one specific way: you can bring your own language model. Caretta Assistant takes the opposite position, a managed assistant with nothing to configure, billed per answer rather than per month.

Both are aimed at smaller companies, which makes this the closest of the three comparisons. Figures are quoted from both products' own pages as of 23 August 2026.

The short version

Crisp Mini is $45 a month, includes four seats and roughly $5 of AI credits. Caretta is $0.0355 per answer with no monthly fee and no seat count. Crisp gives you a whole multichannel inbox for that $45. Caretta gives you one thing, answers, and does not charge you in months when nobody asks anything.

The genuine technical difference is model choice. Crisp lets you connect ChatGPT, Claude, Mistral, Gemini or self-hosted models. Caretta manages the model for you and does not expose that choice at all.

What Crisp does better

Channels, by a wide margin. Crisp covers WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, SMS, Telegram and email in one inbox. Caretta covers the web widget, WhatsApp and the API. If your customers reach you on Instagram, this comparison is already settled.

More ways to feed the AI. Crisp trains from website crawl, help centre articles, Q&A snippets, uploaded PDFs and CSVs, and past conversation history. Caretta trains from your website crawl. If your knowledge lives in PDFs and internal documents rather than on public pages, Crisp ingests it directly and we do not.

Bring your own model. Connecting your own LLM, including self-hosted, is a real capability for companies with a data-residency requirement or an existing vendor relationship. We do not offer it.

A free tier and a 14-day full trial. Crisp's free plan includes two seats and the trial covers all features without a card. Caretta has neither.

What Caretta does better

Quiet months cost nothing. $45 a month is $540 a year whether or not a single visitor writes in. Per-answer billing simply stops when questions stop.

AI credits do not run out mid-month. Crisp's Mini plan includes roughly $5 of AI credits, which the company describes as around 90 automated conversations. Past that you are buying more credits. With Caretta there is no allowance to exhaust and no cliff to hit, just a straight line at $0.0355.

Repeated questions cost less. $0.0122 instead of $0.0355 when the answer is already in your knowledge base. Since a small shop's questions repeat heavily, this bends real bills down.

Nothing to configure. No model to choose, no keys to manage, no snippets to write. Crisp's flexibility is genuine power, and for an owner who does not want to make those decisions it is also genuine work.

Unsure answers are free and a daily cap is standard.

How differently they talk

Because Crisp lets you attach your own model, its voice depends heavily on which model you chose and how you wrote your snippets. That is flexible and it is also unpredictable: two Crisp installations can sound nothing alike.

Caretta fixes the model and gives you the voice controls instead. A name, a personality in your own words, and one of seven speaking tones.

Seven presets ship with the product; the personality and name are yours to set.

The trade is straightforward. Crisp offers control over the engine, Caretta offers control over the character. If you have an opinion about which model answers your customers, Crisp respects it. If you have an opinion about how your brand should sound and no opinion at all about model vendors, Caretta gets you there in a couple of clicks.

One detail worth knowing: Crisp caps answer snippets at 1,000 characters per question and answer pair. Caretta has no snippet-writing step, since it reads the pages themselves, but that also means it can only be as good as what your pages actually say.

Where each one is the right answer

Choose Crisp if

  • Customers message you on Instagram, Messenger, SMS or Telegram
  • Your knowledge sits in PDFs, spreadsheets or a help centre rather than public pages
  • You want to pick or self-host the language model
  • You need several seats and a shared inbox for $45 rather than per person
  • You want to trial everything free for two weeks first

Choose Caretta if

  • Almost all your questions are answerable from your website
  • Your volume swings, and you refuse to pay in the slow months
  • You do not want to choose a model, manage credits, or write snippets
  • You want a named assistant with a tone you set, per website
  • You want a hard daily spending ceiling

The honest limits on our side

No free tier, no trial without topping up a balance. No Instagram, Messenger, SMS or Telegram. No PDF or CSV ingestion, so knowledge that is not on a crawlable page has to be published or it is invisible to the assistant. No model choice. And no shared multichannel inbox of the kind Crisp gives you at Mini.

Put plainly: Crisp at $45 is a lot of software. If you will use the channels and the inbox, it is good value and the comparison is not really about the AI at all.

Cost, worked through honestly

The break-even depends entirely on your volume, so do this rather than trusting either vendor. Crisp Mini's $45 covers about 90 automated conversations in included credits. Roughly 1,270 Caretta answers cost the same $45. If your conversations run three or four messages each, those 90 conversations are in the region of 300 messages, and per-answer billing looks considerably cheaper at that shape. At very high volume with heavy multichannel use, the flat plan closes the gap. Run your own numbers before choosing.

Common questions

Can I use Caretta alongside Crisp?

Two chat widgets on one page confuses visitors. Test on a staging site or a single section instead.

What happens when Crisp's AI credits run out?

You buy more, or automated conversations stop until the next cycle. This is the practical difference between an allowance and a balance: an allowance resets and can run dry mid-month, a balance is simply yours until spent.

Does Caretta support WhatsApp like Crisp does?

Yes, WhatsApp is supported. Instagram, Messenger, SMS and Telegram are not.

Which handles a wrong answer better?

Both escalate to a human when unsure. Caretta additionally does not charge for low-confidence answers and tells the visitor it is not certain rather than guessing.

Both products change their pricing. Check Crisp's pricing page and the live figures on the Caretta Assistant page before you decide.
